A great many kitchens across the towns we serve have the washing machine discharging into a spigot on the sink trap rather than into a dedicated standpipe. It is a perfectly legitimate arrangement and it works well when it is set up correctly. When it is not, it produces a set of faults that look convincingly like appliance problems and are not. Why the Connection Type Matters
A machine pumping out does so with force and at a considerable rate, and the waste it discharges into has to accept that volume without backing up. A dedicated standpipe of the correct diameter and height is designed for exactly that. A sink trap spigot is designed to accept it too, but it is sharing the run with a sink that may itself be partly blocked, and the geometry is less forgiving.
The other difference is the trap. The machine’s own drain hose is meant to rise to a specified height before falling to the connection, and that rise is what stops water flowing back or siphoning out. Where a machine has been installed with the hose run flat along the floor to a low spigot, that protection is gone.
Water Backing Up Into the Sink
The classic symptom is grey water appearing in the sink bowl during the machine’s drain phase, sometimes with fibre or detergent foam. Households usually interpret this as the machine pumping the wrong way, which it cannot do.
What is actually happening is that the shared waste run cannot accept the flow rate. A partial blockage further down, most often a build-up of grease and food residue in the horizontal section beyond the trap, restricts the pipe. The machine’s pump is stronger than gravity drainage from a sink, so the water takes the path of least resistance and rises into the bowl.
The fix is to clear the waste run rather than to look at the machine. A machine blamed for this will test perfectly on a bench.
Siphoning and the Machine That Never Fills
The opposite problem is more insidious. If the drain hose sits too low, or if the connection creates a continuous fall from the machine to the waste, water siphons out of the drum as fast as it comes in. The machine fills, the level never rises to target, and it keeps trying.
What the household sees is a machine that runs for a very long time, uses a great deal of water, and produces poorly washed laundry because the detergent is being drawn away continuously. Some machines eventually report a fill fault, which sends everyone looking at the valve and the water supply.
The diagnostic is straightforward. Lift the drain hose so that its highest point sits well above the drum level and run a fill. If the machine now fills normally, the installation was siphoning. Securing the hose at the correct height permanently resolves it.
Smells Coming Back Into the Machine
Where the machine’s hose connects below the trap water seal, or where the spigot connection has been made without a proper seal, drain odours travel back up the hose into the drum. Households report a persistent smell that survives every maintenance wash and every seal clean, because the source is not in the machine at all.
A blanked spigot left open after an old machine was removed does the same thing, venting the waste run directly into the cupboard. It is worth checking that any unused spigot has been properly capped rather than left with a loose cover.
The Blanking Plug Nobody Removes
Sink traps supplied with a washing machine spigot come with a knock-out or a moulded blank inside it, and that blank has to be removed before the connection will drain. Fitting a hose over a spigot that is still blanked produces a machine that will not empty at all, and it is a surprisingly common finding after a new kitchen or a new machine.
The symptom is total, immediate and easy to misread as a failed pump. If a machine has never drained since the day it was installed, this is the first thing to check.
Getting the Installation Right
The drain hose should rise to the height specified by the manufacturer, typically between sixty and ninety centimetres, before descending to the connection. It should be secured at that height rather than resting against the back of the machine, because a hose that slips down reintroduces siphoning weeks later.
The connection at the spigot needs a proper clip. A hose pushed on and left relies on friction alone, and a pump surge will lift it off, which puts a full drum of water onto the kitchen floor.
Where the sink is used heavily for washing up, it is worth accepting that the shared run needs periodic attention. Grease from washing up and fibre from the machine combine into a deposit that neither would produce alone, and clearing it every so often prevents the backing up described above.
Telling an Installation Fault From a Machine Fault
If water appears in the sink, if the machine takes far longer than it should, or if drainage problems began immediately after the machine was moved or the kitchen was altered, look at the plumbing first. If the machine drains slowly with a clean filter into a known-good waste, the pump or the filter housing is the more likely answer.
