Orange speckling on knives and forks, dull grey patches on a stainless drum, or a rash of small brown spots appearing across a whole load are complaints we hear regularly, and they are almost always blamed on the machine. Usually the machine is innocent. Cutlery rusting in the dishwasher has several distinct causes with quite different remedies, and telling them apart saves a great deal of pointless replacement. Stainless Steel Does Not Rust on Its Own
Stainless steel resists corrosion because chromium in the alloy forms a thin invisible oxide layer on the surface. That layer repairs itself continuously in the presence of oxygen, which is why a scratched stainless surface does not go on corroding. It is a passive defence rather than a coating.
Two things defeat it. Chloride ions attack the oxide layer directly, and contact with ordinary carbon steel transfers iron particles onto the surface, which then rust in place and stain what they are sitting on. Nearly every dishwasher rust complaint comes down to one of those two, and the second is far more common than people expect.
Contamination From Other Items
A single carbon steel item in the load is enough. Old kitchen knives, particularly good cook’s knives, are frequently not stainless at all. Tin openers, baking tins, cast iron, and cheap utensils with plated finishes that have worn through all shed iron particles during a cycle, and the circulating water distributes them across everything else.
The result is small orange spots that appear on items that have never rusted before, often on the flat of a blade or the back of a spoon. They usually wipe off with a mild abrasive cream or a proprietary stainless cleaner, which is the diagnostic as much as the cure. Genuine corrosion does not wipe away.
The machine itself can be the source once it has aged. Rack coating that has chipped exposes the steel wire beneath, and a rusting rack tine deposits iron onto everything resting against it. Look along the tines for bare metal, particularly at the tips where items are pushed on and off repeatedly. Repair caps and touch-up paint are available and are worth using as soon as chipping appears, because the alternative is a rack that progressively contaminates every load.
Salt Spillage
The other major cause is dishwasher salt in the tub. When the softener reservoir is refilled it overflows slightly, which is normal, but salt left in the base is a concentrated chloride source sitting against stainless steel. Over time that produces pitting on the tub floor and on anything resting low in the machine.
The remedy is simple and widely ignored. After refilling salt, run a short rinse cycle immediately with the machine empty. That flushes the spillage away before it can do anything. Households that top up salt and then load the machine normally are introducing the problem every few weeks.
Using ordinary table salt instead of dishwasher salt makes this considerably worse, since it contains anti-caking agents that damage the softener resin as well.
Detergent Strength and Programme Choice
Modern dishwasher detergents are alkaline and aggressive by design. On short high-temperature programmes with heavy dosing, they can dull the finish on aluminium items and on some decorative platings, which reads as damage but is a surface effect rather than corrosion.
Silver and silver-plated items should not share a load with stainless at all. An electrochemical reaction between the two in hot detergent solution produces tarnishing on the silver and can mark the stainless. This is one of the few cases where the traditional advice about separating cutlery types has a genuine mechanism behind it.
Aluminium items are worth mentioning separately. Aluminium pans, some bakeware and certain older utensils react with alkaline detergent and emerge dull, chalky or blackened. That is not rust and it will not clean off, because the surface itself has been altered. Anything aluminium is better washed by hand, and this is one of the few cases where the traditional advice is entirely sound.
Water Conditions in This Area
Hard water contributes indirectly. A machine with an empty salt reservoir passes untreated water through the system, and the deposits that leaves create rough surfaces where residue and particles lodge. Those deposits also hold moisture against steel between cycles, which extends the time any contamination has to act.
Keeping the softener working therefore protects the load as well as the machine, which is another reason the salt light matters more than its low profile suggests.
Working Out Which One You Have
If the marks wipe off with a stainless cleaner and reappear across many items, suspect contamination and look for a carbon steel item or a chipped rack. If the marks are pitted and permanent, particularly low in the machine, suspect salt spillage. If a specific item is affected and nothing else is, that item is probably not stainless. If dulling rather than spotting is the complaint, look at detergent and programme choice.
