Almost every washer dryer sold in this country carries two capacity figures, and washer dryer drying capacity is the one households routinely overlook. A machine badged nine kilograms will very often dry only five or six, and that gap is not a manufacturing shortcoming. It is a physical necessity that follows from how the machine dries. Every September we attend call-outs where the appliance is working exactly as designed and the complaint comes entirely from loading it as though one number applied to both jobs. Why Washer Dryer Drying Capacity Is Always the Smaller Figure
Washing needs water and agitation, and a drum can be filled generously because wet fabric compresses and still moves. Drying needs airflow, and airflow needs empty space. Hot air must pass around and between every item in the drum, pick up moisture, carry it to the condensing surface and return. A drum packed to washing capacity has no room for that air to circulate, so it simply cannot happen.
This is why the washer dryer drying capacity figure exists as a separate specification. The manufacturer has established the maximum load at which its air path still works. Exceed it and the machine does not fail, it under-performs, which is a far more frustrating outcome because nothing appears to be broken.
What Overloading Actually Does to the Cycle
An overloaded drum stops tumbling and starts rolling. Instead of items separating and falling through the air stream, the load forms a single dense mass that turns as one lump. The outside of that mass dries reasonably well. The centre never sees moving air at all, and comes out as wet as it went in.
Households then run the programme again, which doubles the electricity used and puts the heating element and the motor through a second full duty cycle for a result that a correctly sized load would have achieved first time. Repeated across an autumn term, that pattern shortens component life measurably. Heater elements and thermostats fail earlier on machines that are habitually run twice.
Sensor drying makes it worse rather than better. A sensor-dry programme measures moisture by conductivity across the tumbling load, and a load that is not tumbling gives the sensor a false reading from whichever damp mass happens to be in contact. The machine either stops far too early, believing the load dry, or runs to its maximum time without ever satisfying the sensor.
Working Out the Real Figure for Your Machine
The two capacities are printed on the rating plate, which sits inside the door aperture on the vast majority of machines, and they are also given on the first page of the manual. The format is usually expressed as two numbers separated by a slash, and the smaller one is the washer dryer drying capacity.
Where the plate is illegible or the manual is long gone, a reasonable working assumption is half the wash figure. That is conservative on some models and about right on most. It is considerably better than assuming the machine will dry whatever it will wash, which is the assumption that generates the call-outs.
In practice this means a full wash load has to be split before drying. Half comes out, half stays in, and the drying programme runs twice on properly sized loads rather than once on an impossible one. That feels inefficient and it is not. Two correctly loaded drying cycles finish sooner and use less electricity than one overloaded cycle followed by the repeat it inevitably needs.
Why Autumn Exposes the Problem
Through the summer months most households dry very little indoors, so the washer dryer drying capacity limit is rarely tested. Laundry goes on a line, the machine washes and nothing more is asked of it. From the end of September that changes within a fortnight, and a machine that has spent four months as a washing machine is suddenly expected to dry five or six loads a week as well.
That transition is why our September and October call-outs cluster around drying complaints. The appliance has not changed and nothing has broken. What has changed is that a limit which was never approached in July is now being exceeded several times a week, and the household reasonably concludes the machine has developed a fault.
When It Is the Machine Rather Than the Loading
Loading explains a great many drying complaints but certainly not all of them. Where a household is respecting the washer dryer drying capacity and the machine still leaves laundry damp, the fault is real and needs diagnosis. The usual culprits are a scaled condenser feed, blocked internal ducting, a failed heating element or a thermostat cutting the heat prematurely.

A useful distinguishing test is a deliberately small load. Put in three or four items, run a full drying programme and see what comes out. If a light load dries properly, the machine is sound and the loading is the issue. If even a small load stays damp, something in the heating or condensing chain has failed and needs an engineer.
