A vented tumble dryer is the simplest drying appliance in the house and the tumble dryer vent hose is the simplest part of it, which is precisely why it gets ignored. It carries hot moist air from the drum to the outside world, and if it cannot do that freely the entire appliance under-performs no matter how healthy the heater and motor are. As the weather turns and machines move from occasional use to near-daily running, hose problems that went unnoticed all summer become obvious within a fortnight. What a Tumble Dryer Vent Hose Has to Achieve
The dryer pulls room air across a heating element, drives it through the tumbling load where it collects moisture, and then has to expel it. The volume involved is substantial. A full drying cycle removes several litres of water from the laundry, and every drop of it leaves as vapour through the hose.
Any restriction in that path reduces the flow rate, and reduced flow means the air spends longer in the drum, gets hotter and carries less moisture away per minute. The machine compensates by running longer, the thermostats cut in more frequently to protect against overheating, and drying times stretch from an hour to two or three.
Crushing Behind the Machine
The most common fault we find is a tumble dryer vent hose crushed flat between the back of the appliance and the wall. It happens whenever a machine is pushed fully back into its space, and it happens again every time somebody cleans behind it. The hose is designed to be flexible, not to be compressed, and a flattened section can reduce the effective bore by more than half.
Nobody sees it because the hose is behind the appliance in a gap too narrow to inspect. The dryer is left with perhaps eight or ten centimetres of clearance, the hose needs a gentle curve to make the turn, and it gets bent double instead. Pulling the machine out fifteen centimetres from the wall solves a remarkable proportion of the drying complaints we attend.
Length, Bends and the Lint That Settles
Manufacturers specify a maximum hose length, and it is shorter than most people assume. Every additional metre adds resistance, and every bend adds considerably more. A hose run around two corners and along a skirting board to reach a distant window can exceed its resistance budget while looking perfectly tidy.
Lint is the second problem that comes with length. Fibre carried out of the drum settles wherever the air slows, which means at every bend and along every horizontal run. Over a season that builds a soft lining inside the hose, narrowing it further and, more seriously, providing fuel close to a heat source. A tumble dryer vent hose should be disconnected and cleared through at least once a year, and more often in a household drying pet bedding or towelling.

Venting Into the Room and Why It Is a Poor Idea
Some households vent through a window with the hose simply propped in the opening, and some vent into the room entirely with a condensing box or a bucket arrangement. Neither works well once the weather cools. A propped hose falls out or blows back, and the moisture returns to the kitchen. A condensing box collects a fraction of the water and releases the rest as humidity.
The consequence is damp walls, streaming windows and mould in the coldest corner of the room, which the household then attributes to the building rather than the appliance. A properly fitted wall vent with a backdraught flap costs little and resolves it permanently.
Condensation Traps and Standing Water
A long horizontal run creates a further problem that catches people out. Warm moist air travelling through a cool hose condenses inside it, and the resulting water collects at the lowest point of any dip. Once a puddle forms in a sag between two supports, the effective bore at that point drops to almost nothing, and the machine is trying to push its entire output past a plug of standing water.
The symptom is a dryer that works acceptably for the first twenty minutes and then slows markedly, because the condensation needs time to accumulate. Supporting the tumble dryer vent hose so that it runs level or falls gently towards the outlet prevents it entirely, and costs nothing beyond a couple of clips.
When the Hose Is Clear and Drying Is Still Slow
