Dogs and cats shed heavily as the days shorten, changing their summer coat for a winter one, and a pet hair vacuum cleaner workload in October is several times what the same household generates in June. Cutting the wrapped hair off with scissors along the length of the roller, then clearing the end caps, takes ten minutes and should be done fortnightly through the moult rather than annually.
Filters, Airflow and Overheating
Every vacuum cleaner protects its motor with filters, and every motor is cooled by the air passing through it. Those two facts combine badly under a pet hair vacuum cleaner workload. As filters clog, airflow falls, and as airflow falls the motor loses its cooling while working harder against the restriction.
The result is a thermal cut-out, which most modern machines have. The vacuum stops without warning, the household assumes it has broken, and twenty minutes later it works again. Cyclones, Bags and Where Hair Collects
Bagless machines separate debris by spinning air through a cyclone, and hair interferes with that process by bridging across the cyclone inlets. Fine dust then carries straight through to the filters instead of dropping into the bin, which is why a pet hair vacuum cleaner clogs its filters far faster than the same model in a household without animals.
Bagged machines cope somewhat better because the bag holds hair and dust together, but the bag surface is the filter, and hair blinds it early. A bag that is only half full by volume may already be passing very little air.

Cordless vacuums struggle more than mains machines under this load, because their motors are smaller and their filters are physically tiny.
