Sound is the giveaway. A vacuum drawing air freely has a load on the motor and runs at a certain pitch. Block the airway and the motor unloads, so it speeds up and the note rises. The second indicator is heat. A blocked machine loses the cooling air that passes through its motor, so it warms quickly and may cut out on its thermal protection within a few minutes.
