An integrated oven overheating and shutting itself down mid-roast is a fault that arrives with the cooking season, and it is one of the few appliance problems where the appliance is frequently blameless. Built-in ovens depend entirely on the cabinet around them to carry heat away, and where that cabinet has been modified, blocked or built wrongly in the first place, the oven has no way of shedding what it produces. How an Integrated Oven Is Meant to Stay Cool

A built-in oven produces a great deal of heat that does not go into the food. Some radiates through the door, and the rest has to be removed by a cooling fan that draws air in through the plinth or the cabinet base, passes it around the oven casing and expels it through vents above the door.

That circuit only works if air can get in and out. The housing is specified with defined clearances at the back, the sides and the base, and those gaps are not optional finishing details. They are the air path. Integrated oven overheating happens when any part of that path is closed off, and the appliance responds by tripping its thermal cut-out to protect itself.

What Blocks the Air Path and Causes Integrated Oven Overheating

The oven then has no cool air to draw, so it recirculates its own hot exhaust and the cabinet temperature climbs steadily through a long cook.

Insulating material is the fourth and it is worth naming, because it seems sensible and is not. Foam, board or loft-type insulation packed around an oven to reduce heat loss into the kitchen guarantees integrated oven overheating within a season.

The Cooling Fan Itself

Where the cabinet is correct, the fan is the next suspect. The cooling fan is a separate component from the fan inside the cavity that circulates cooking heat, and the two are frequently confused. Inside the cavity, that fan runs only during cooking. The cooling fan usually continues running after the oven has been switched off, sometimes for twenty minutes or more, and that behaviour is normal rather than a fault.

A cooling fan that has failed, seized or lost its bearing produces exactly the same symptoms as a blocked cabinet, because the effect is identical. No air moves. A useful test is simply to listen and to feel for warm air at the vent above the door during a bake. Silence and still air where there should be a steady stream indicates the fan.

What the Cut-Out Is Actually Protecting

The thermal cut-out is not a nuisance feature. Sustained integrated oven overheating damages the door seal, degrades wiring insulation inside the appliance, and transmits heat into the surrounding cabinet, which is chipboard in most kitchens. Cabinet material exposed to prolonged heat discolours, then scorches.
