What the Salt Is Actually Doing

Dishwasher salt does not go into the wash. It regenerates a water softening unit built into the machine, which contains resin beads that strip calcium and magnesium out of the incoming supply before it ever reaches the spray arms. Those beads become saturated after a number of cycles and the salt flushes them clean so they can carry on working.

That means the salt is protecting the inside of the machine rather than the crockery. Without it, the softener stops functioning and hard water passes straight through to the heating element, the spray arms, the pump and every internal surface. The common assumption is that a tablet containing salt makes this unnecessary. The quantity in a tablet is intended to supplement a working softener in moderately hard water, not to replace it. In genuinely hard water the softener still needs filling separately, and the machine will usually indicate as much with a warning light that many households learn to ignore because the dishes still come out clean.

What the Rinse Aid Is Doing

Rinse aid is a surfactant that reduces the surface tension of water so it sheets off rather than beading. That serves two purposes. Water that runs off carries dissolved minerals away with it, which is what prevents spotting. And crockery with less water clinging to it dries faster during the final heated phase, which is why poor drying performance so often turns out to be an empty rinse aid reservoir rather than a heating fault.

Unlike salt, rinse aid genuinely is about results rather than machine protection. A household that does not mind spotting can run without it. The dishes will simply dry more slowly and look worse.

What Happens When the Salt Is Neglected

The heating element is the first casualty. Scale forms on it preferentially because it is the hottest surface in the machine, and once coated it has to run hotter to transfer the same heat into the water. That accelerates its own failure and puts additional load on everything around it.

The spray arms follow. Their jets are small and precisely angled, and scale narrows them unevenly, which changes the spray pattern. A machine with partially blocked arms cleans poorly in specific areas of the load, which householders usually interpret as a loading problem or a detergent problem. Holding a spray arm up to the light and looking through the jets tells the story immediately.

The softener unit itself suffers too. Resin beads left saturated for long periods degrade, and a softener that has been run dry for years will not perform properly even once salt is reintroduced. This is why the advice to keep it topped up matters more than the advice to catch up later.

It is worth adding that the softener has no way of telling you it has stopped working. Unlike a heating fault or a drain blockage, there is no immediate symptom, and the deterioration it allows happens invisibly over years. That is precisely why the salt light exists, and why ignoring it is more consequential than it appears.

Getting the Settings Right

Most machines have an adjustable water hardness setting that controls how much salt is used during regeneration. It is frequently left on the factory default, which assumes moderate hardness, and in a genuinely hard area that means under-regeneration on every cycle. The setting is usually accessible through a button combination and is worth checking against the actual hardness of the local supply rather than left as delivered.

When filling salt for the first time, the reservoir needs water in it as well, and it will overflow slightly, which is normal. Running a rinse cycle immediately afterwards clears any salt spilled into the tub, because salt sitting in the base is corrosive to stainless steel over time.

Reversing Existing Damage

Where scale has already built up, filling the salt reservoir stops it getting worse but does not remove what is there. Removing the spray arms and soaking them separately clears jets that a cycle alone will not.
