Opening the dispenser after a cycle and finding a sodden lump of powder or a pool of liquid still sitting there is one of the more common complaints we hear on appliance repair in Ormskirk visits. Detergent left in the drawer is a water problem rather than a chemistry problem, and the reasons behind it are consistent enough that they can be worked through in order.
How the Dispenser Is Meant to Work
The drawer is not a container that the machine tips out. Water is fed into the top of each compartment through a series of jets in the dispenser housing, and the flow washes the detergent down and into the drum. The main wash compartment simply drains through the bottom. The softener compartment works differently, using a siphon that fills, reaches a level and then empties itself in one go, which is why softener is delivered at the right point in the cycle rather than at the start.
Everything about that arrangement depends on water arriving with enough force, in the right place, at the right time. Reduce the flow, block a jet or disturb the siphon and the detergent stays put no matter how good it is.
The Jets in the Dispenser Housing
Pull the drawer fully out and look up into the recess it sits in. There is a moulded plastic roof there with a pattern of small holes, and in a hard water area those holes scale up steadily. As they narrow, the water arrives as a dribble across part of the compartment rather than a spray across all of it, and powder on the dry side never gets wet enough to move.
This is the single most common cause we find across West Lancashire and Merseyside, and it is entirely down to water hardness rather than anything the household has done wrong. The deposits build slowly enough that performance drops over a year or two without anyone noticing a specific day when it changed.
The Drawer Itself
The drawer accumulates a paste of undissolved detergent and softener residue, particularly around the underside of the softener cap and in the corners of the main compartment. That residue narrows the passages the water needs, and once a partial blockage exists it collects more residue faster. Remove the drawer completely, take out the softener insert where it lifts free, and look at the underside rather than the top, which is where the build-up actually sits.
The softener siphon deserves specific attention. If the cap is not seated correctly after cleaning, or if the seal beneath it is perished, the siphon will not develop the vacuum it needs and softener sits in the compartment indefinitely. A siphon that has been reassembled slightly proud is a surprisingly common cause of a complaint that looks like a machine fault.
Water Pressure and Fill Rate
Where the flow into the machine is weak, the dispenser suffers before anything else does. The machine may still fill and still complete its cycle, so nothing appears wrong, but the jets never generate enough force to clear the compartment. Check the isolation valve behind the machine is fully open, and check the small gauze filter where the fill hose screws onto the machine, which blocks with scale fragments and grit in hard water areas.

How the Machine Is Being Used
Some of it comes down to programme selection and dosing. Cold and quick programmes use less water and a shorter fill, which gives the dispenser less to work with. Powder in particular struggles at low temperatures, and a machine run almost exclusively on twenty or thirty degree quick washes will show residue that the same machine on a longer cycle would not.
Over-dosing compounds it. More detergent than the water can carry away leaves a proportion behind every cycle, and that proportion becomes the residue that narrows the passages. In a hard water area the instinct is to add more, because hardness genuinely reduces detergent effectiveness, but past a certain point the extra simply accumulates in the drawer.
Where liquid detergent is being used in a compartment fitted with the powder divider still in place, or powder used with a liquid flap fitted, delivery will be poor regardless of everything else. It is worth checking which configuration the drawer is set up for.
Working Through It
Start by removing the drawer and washing it thoroughly in hot water, paying attention to the underside of the softener cap and the siphon passages. Then look up into the housing recess with a torch and clear the jets, which can usually be done with a small brush and a descaling solution left to sit rather than by force. Check the fill hose and the inlet filter while the machine is accessible.
Then run a hot maintenance cycle with an empty drum to clear what has been dislodged. In a hard water area, repeating that every couple of months makes a genuine difference to how long the dispenser stays clear.
