A dryer that stops after twenty minutes with a drum full of damp washing, or one that runs for two hours on a small load, is usually reported to us as a heating problem. Frequently it is not. The heat is fine and the drum is turning, and what has gone wrong is the machine’s ability to judge when the load is dry. Tumble dryer sensor drying faults are among the more misdiagnosed problems we see on appliance repair in Ormskirk visits, largely because the symptom looks like something else entirely.
How a Sensor Dryer Decides the Load Is Dry
Timed drying is straightforward. The machine runs for as long as it is told and then stops, regardless of what is in the drum. Sensor drying is different. Two metal strips or bars sit inside the drum, usually low down near the door opening or on the lifter baffles, and the machine passes a very small current between them. Wet fabric tumbling across those bars conducts, dry fabric does not, and the machine watches how frequently a connection is made.
As the load dries, contacts become less frequent, and when the pattern falls below a threshold for long enough the machine begins its cool-down and ends the cycle. It is an elegant system and it works well, but it depends entirely on those bars reading accurately.
Why the Sensors Stop Reading Correctly
The most common cause by a wide margin is a film of fabric softener and detergent residue coating the sensor bars. Softener in particular leaves a waxy deposit that builds up over months of use, and once the bars are coated they read a dry load as drier still, or fail to register wet fabric at all. The machine concludes the load is finished and shuts down early, which produces exactly the complaint of damp washing after a full cycle.
Limescale does the same thing from the other direction. In hard water areas the residue carried over from the washing machine leaves mineral deposits on the bars, and a scaled sensor can read a connection continuously even with a dry load, which sends the machine into an endlessly extended cycle.
Physical damage is less common but does happen. The bars sit where laundry tumbles across them constantly, and a zip, a stiff button or an underwired garment can score or bend one. A bar that has been pushed out of position no longer makes reliable contact with the load.
The Faults That Look Like Sensor Problems But Are Not
Airflow restriction produces a similar picture and needs ruling out first. A dryer that cannot move air through the load dries slowly, and the sensor correctly reports fabric that is still wet, so the cycle extends. The machine is behaving properly and the fault is in the lint filter, the ducting or, on a condenser machine, the condenser unit itself.
Overloading does the same. A drum packed tight prevents tumbling, and fabric that is not moving does not pass across the sensor bars. The machine reads whatever happens to be resting against them, which may be the one dry item in an otherwise wet load.
Load composition matters too. A mixed load of heavy towels and light synthetics dries at very different rates, and the sensor reports on whatever is touching it. The machine stops when its reading says dry, and the towels come out damp while everything else is fine. That is not a fault, it is the limitation of the system, and separating loads by fabric weight resolves it.
Checking and Cleaning the Sensors
Open the door and look for two metal strips, typically a few centimetres long, running vertically or horizontally near the front of the drum. On some machines they are on the baffles instead. They should be bright metal. If they look dull, filmed or slightly brown, that is the deposit causing the problem.
Clean them with a little white vinegar or a mild descaling solution on a cloth, then wipe with clean water and dry. Fine abrasive is sometimes suggested but risks scoring the surface, which gives residue somewhere to lodge, so it is worth avoiding unless the deposit is genuinely stubborn. Doing this every few months in a household that uses fabric softener heavily prevents the problem returning.
When It Is Not the Sensors
If the bars are clean and bright, the load is reasonable and the airflow is clear, but the machine still misjudges the cycle, attention moves to the wiring to the sensors and the control board reading them. A break in the sensor circuit produces a permanent open condition, which most machines interpret as a dry load and act on immediately.
Where a machine ends its cycle almost as soon as it starts, regardless of what is in the drum, that is the pattern to suspect. It is a straightforward diagnosis with the right equipment and considerably less expensive than the heating repair many households assume they are facing.
