A machine that has simply stopped, with the display frozen on a time that never counts down and the drum sitting still, is more puzzling than a machine that fails outright. Nothing is obviously broken. There is no noise, no error and often no water problem visible from the front. Modern Machines Wait Rather Than Fail
Older machines ran on a mechanical timer that advanced regardless of what was happening. Electronic machines do not work that way. Each stage of a programme has conditions that must be met before the next stage begins, and if one is not met the machine holds position and keeps checking. It is not stuck in the sense of being broken. It is stuck in the sense of being unsatisfied.
That is why the displayed time stops counting. The remaining time is an estimate based on progressing normally, and a machine holding at a stage cannot estimate anything, so the figure freezes. Households often report the time going up rather than down, which is the same behaviour showing itself differently as the machine revises its estimate.
Waiting for Water
The most frequent stall is at the fill stage. The machine has opened its valve and is waiting for the water level to reach a target, and until it does, nothing else happens. A weak supply, a partly closed isolation valve, a blocked inlet filter or a kinked hose all produce this, and the machine will wait for a considerable time before deciding something is wrong.
Confirm it by listening. A machine waiting for water usually makes a faint sound of water running or a soft hum from the valve. If it is silent, the valve is not open and the problem is upstream of the fill rather than in the supply.
Waiting for Temperature
On a heated programme the machine will not advance until the water reaches the required temperature. A failed heating element leaves it waiting indefinitely, and because there is no noise and no visible symptom, this is the stall that mystifies households most. The tell is that cold programmes complete normally while warm and hot ones stop at the same point every time.
Scale accumulation contributes here in hard water areas. An element coated in deposits heats the water so slowly that the machine either takes an extraordinarily long time or gives up, and that degradation happens gradually enough that no single day marks the change.
Waiting to Drain
Before a spin, the machine must empty. If it cannot, it will not spin, and it will not move on. A blocked filter, a restricted drain hose, a blocked standpipe or a failed pump all produce a machine sitting with water in the drum and no apparent activity. This is the easiest stall for a household to identify because the water is visible through the door.
Siphoning is the version of this that catches people out. Where a drain hose has been pushed too far into a standpipe, the machine drains continuously as it fills, and it can never reach its target level. The symptom looks like a fill problem while the cause is a drain arrangement, and it frequently appears immediately after a machine has been moved or reinstalled.
Waiting for the Door
The interlock must confirm the door is closed and locked before anything runs. A failing interlock that has not quite engaged leaves the machine waiting at the very start of a programme, and this is the one stall that produces no water and no drum movement at all. A door that appears shut but has not actually latched, often because the seal has swollen or the catch has worn, gives the same result.
Balance and the Spin Stage
A machine that reaches the spin and then repeatedly slows, redistributes and tries again is not stuck exactly, but it will not progress either. It is detecting an unbalanced load and refusing to spin at speed, which is a protective behaviour rather than a fault. Single heavy items such as a towel or a duvet cause it most often. Opening the door and redistributing the load usually resolves it in one attempt.
Where the machine does this with every load including well distributed ones, the suspension or the drum bearings may be allowing more movement than the machine expects, and that is worth looking at properly.
Working Out Which Stall You Have
Note the point in the programme where it stops, whether there is water in the drum, whether the water is hot, and whether the same thing happens on a cold quick wash. Those four observations separate almost all of the causes above without any tools at all, and they make the conversation with an engineer far more productive.
Before anything else, check the filter and the drain path, because they account for a large share of stalls and are accessible without dismantling anything. If the machine stalls at the same point every time on a heated programme but completes a cold one, expect the element to be the answer.
