Washing Machine Drains But Will Not Spin – The Faults Behind Soaking Wet Washing

Few washing machine faults are as frustrating as one where the cycle finishes, the water has drained away, but the clothes come out heavy and soaking because the machine never spun. It is a very specific symptom, and one that points to a fairly defined set of causes quite different from a machine that will not drain at all. As a team carrying out appliance repair in Ormskirk and across the surrounding area, we diagnose this fault regularly, and the cause usually comes down to one of a handful of components.

Why a Machine Drains But Refuses to Spin

The first thing to understand is that draining and spinning are separate functions. A machine can pump water away perfectly while being completely unable to drive the drum at high speed, which tells us the drain pump is fine and the fault lies in the parts responsible for spinning. That single observation already narrows the search considerably and is the kind of logical sequence we set out in our guidance on the most common washing machine failure patterns.

On belt-driven machines, worn motor carbon brushes are one of the leading causes. These small carbon blocks transfer power to the motor and wear down over years of use. As they reach the end, the motor loses the power to reach spin speed even though it can still turn the drum gently for washing. They are inexpensive to replace and the repair is usually very economical, which is good news when this turns out to be the culprit.

The Other Usual Suspects

A failed or weak motor capacitor can leave a machine unable to build up to spin speed, and a slipped or perished drive belt obviously stops the drum being driven at all on belt machines. Then there is the door interlock and lid switch, because many machines refuse to spin if they cannot confirm the door is securely shut, so an intermittent interlock can block the spin while still allowing the rest of the cycle. Each of these produces the same wet-washing symptom and each needs a different part, which is exactly why a proper diagnosis matters before anything is bought.

The Load-Balance Catch

There is also a perfectly normal cause that we are always careful to rule out first. Modern machines refuse to spin at full speed if the load is badly unbalanced, to protect themselves from damage. A single heavy item like a towelling robe or a bath mat can throw the balance off enough that the machine attempts to spin, gives up and drains. Redistributing the load and trying again is always worth doing before calling anyone, because it costs nothing and sometimes that is the whole answer. Brands such as Indesit, covered in our Indesit appliance repairs guidance, are particularly cautious about balance.

Getting It Diagnosed

If the load is balanced and the machine still will not spin, the fault is mechanical or electrical and worth a proper look, especially as brushes and capacitors are cheap parts that make for an economical repair when caught. We carry out washing machine repair across the area, with local cover including washing machine repair Formby and washing machine repair Kirkby. If you are pulling out sopping wet washing, call 01695 768 738 and we will find out why the spin has stopped.

It is worth resisting the temptation to keep running cycle after cycle in the hope the spin returns, because a machine straining against a failing capacitor or worn brushes can put extra stress on the motor and control board. Stopping at the first sign and getting the fault read accurately keeps the repair small, and on the brush and capacitor faults that cause most of these cases, that means a quick and affordable fix rather than a drawn-out one.
