Washer dryers get a poor reputation for drying, and some of that is deserved because they ask one drum to do two jobs. A great deal of it, though, comes down to a drying system that most owners have never had explained to them. How a Washer Dryer Dries Without a Vent
A vented tumble dryer pushes moist air out of the house through a hose. A washer dryer has no such route, because it lives under a worktop plumbed into the mains and a drain. Instead it uses the cold water supply it already has. Air is heated and passed through the load, picks up moisture, and is then drawn up a channel at the back of the tub where a fine spray or trickle of cold water runs down the inside surface.
The moist air meets that cooled surface, the moisture condenses out, and the resulting water runs down and away through the same drain the wash cycle uses. The dried air returns to the heater and goes round again. There is no lint filter in the conventional sense because the condensing water carries fibre away to the drain, which is why the lint has to go somewhere else and frequently ends up where it should not.
Why the System Stops Working
The condensing channel is the usual culprit. Fibre, detergent residue and scale build up on the internal surface over years, and a coated channel transfers heat far less effectively. Air passes through without giving up its moisture, so it returns to the drum already saturated and the load stops drying no matter how long the cycle runs.
The cold water supply to the condenser can also fail. A small valve or restrictor feeds that trickle, and if it blocks with scale, no cooling water reaches the channel at all. In a hard water area this is common, and the symptom is a machine that heats enthusiastically, produces a great deal of steam, and dries nothing.
Drain restriction produces a subtler version. Condensed water has to leave continuously during drying, and if the drain path is partly blocked, water backs up into the channel and the system loses its ability to condense. This often shows itself as a machine that dries acceptably for the first part of the cycle and then stops making progress.
Ruling Out the Heating Side First
Before assuming a condensing fault, confirm the machine is actually producing heat. Run a drying cycle for fifteen minutes and open the door briefly. Genuinely hot, humid air means the heater is working and the fault is in condensing. Air that is barely warm points at the drying element or its thermostats instead, which is a different repair.
A machine with a heating fault tends to leave the load cold and damp. A machine with a condensing fault leaves it hot and damp, often with visible condensation on the door glass and a distinct smell of warm laundry. That difference is the most useful single observation a householder can make before ringing.
Where the Lint Goes
Because there is no accessible lint filter, fibre released during drying travels with the airflow and the condensing water. Most of it reaches the drain. Some settles in the sump, some collects in the pump filter, and some lodges in the condensing channel itself. That accumulation is precisely what degrades performance over time, and it is why drying performance on a washer dryer declines gradually rather than failing suddenly.
Cleaning the pump filter regularly matters more on a washer dryer than on a plain washing machine for exactly this reason. A filter clogged with felted fibre restricts the drain, which restricts condensing, which reduces drying, which is a chain of consequences from a five minute task.
What Helps and What Does Not
Load size is the most effective lever. A washer dryer can typically wash considerably more than it can dry, and the drying capacity quoted is usually around half the wash capacity. Attempting to dry a full wash load in one go will disappoint regardless of how well the machine is working, and it is the single most common reason for a complaint where nothing is actually wrong.
Running a hot maintenance wash occasionally helps keep the condensing channel and the sump clear of residue. Reducing fabric softener helps too, since softener contributes to the film that coats internal surfaces.
What does not help is running longer drying cycles, which simply extends the time the machine spends recirculating saturated air, or increasing the temperature setting, which puts more moisture into an air path that cannot remove it.
