The cable rewind is one of those mechanisms nobody thinks about until it stops working, and then it becomes the most irritating thing about the machine. What the Mechanism Actually Is

Pressing the rewind button releases a brake, and the spring unwinds, turning the drum and pulling the cable back in through a guide in the body. Electrical continuity is maintained through slip rings and brushes on the drum, which is how a rotating drum can carry mains current to a stationary machine.
Every fault comes from one of those four elements. The spring loses tension or breaks, the brake sticks or fails to release, the cable tangles on the drum, or the guide wears and catches. None of them involve the vacuum motor, which is why a machine with a dead rewind usually still cleans perfectly well.
The Cord That Will Not Go Back In
If pressing the button does nothing at all, the brake is the first suspect. Over years the release mechanism collects dust and the pivot stiffens, and the brake no longer disengages fully. Sometimes it will release with the cable pulled out slightly further first, which takes the load off the brake and lets it move, and that is a useful diagnostic as much as a workaround.
If the button clicks and the cable moves an inch and stops, the problem is more likely a tangle on the drum. Cable that has been rewound unevenly over years, particularly where it has been allowed to snap back at speed, crosses over itself and jams. Once it has jammed once it tends to jam repeatedly in the same place.
If nothing happens and the machine gives no resistance when the cable is pulled, the spring has probably broken. A healthy mechanism resists as the cable comes out and that resistance builds. A cable that pulls out limply has lost its spring entirely.
The Cord That Comes Back Too Fast
This is less a fault than a consequence of how the machine has been used. Allowing the cable to retract at full speed puts the plug through repeated impacts against the body and stresses the cable where it enters the guide. Over time the outer sheath at that point wears through, and that is a genuine safety concern rather than a cosmetic one.
The correct approach is to hold the cable and walk it back in while pressing the button, which also winds it evenly on the drum and prevents the tangles that cause the opposite problem. It takes ten seconds and roughly doubles the life of the mechanism.
The Cord That Only Goes Halfway
A spring that has weakened rather than broken produces this. It has enough tension to retract the light early section and not enough to overcome friction once most of the cable is back on the drum. It can also be caused by a cable that has stiffened with age, particularly on machines stored in cold garages or outbuildings, where the sheath loses flexibility and resists winding.
The guide where the cable enters the body wears into a groove over the years, and a worn guide grips rather than allowing the cable to slide. Running a finger around it will usually reveal a sharp edge where there should be a smooth radius.
Whether It Is Worth Repairing
This is the practical question, and the answer depends heavily on the machine. On a good quality cylinder vacuum with plenty of life left, replacing a rewind assembly is worthwhile because the alternative is a working machine discarded over one mechanism. On an older budget machine already showing reduced suction and a tired motor, it is harder to justify.
The complication is access. Reaching the rewind assembly means opening the body, and on many machines that involves working around the motor housing and disturbing mains connections. The slip ring contacts in particular need to be reassembled correctly, because a poor connection there causes intermittent power loss that is easily mistaken for a switch fault later.
It is emphatically not a job to attempt without disconnecting the machine, and where the cable sheath is damaged at the guide the whole cable should be replaced rather than the mechanism repaired around it. A worn sheath on a moving cable is the beginning of a genuine hazard.
Making the Mechanism Last
Walk the cable back rather than letting it snap. Do not pull it out to its full extent and then tug further, which is what breaks springs. Keep the machine out of unheated spaces where the cable stiffens. And if the cord ever catches on the way in, stop and pull it out again rather than forcing the button, because forcing a tangle is what turns a minor snag into a jammed drum.
