Cleaning your dishwasher is one of those jobs that almost every owner has been told to do — usually by running a cup of vinegar through a hot cycle every few months — and almost no owner has been told why. As engineers who regularly attend appliance repair in Ormskirk and the surrounding towns for dishwashers that have stopped cleaning properly, we see a clear pattern: the machines that get a proper clean every few months last years longer than the ones that do not, and a surprising number of “broken” dishwashers we are called to are not broken at all but choked with grease, limescale and food debris in places the owner has never looked. This guide is the version we wish more dishwasher owners had read five years before we got the call.
The Parts of a Dishwasher That Genuinely Need Cleaning and Why
A dishwasher works by spraying hot, detergent-loaded water against the dishes from rotating arms above and below the racks. The dirty water then drops to a sump at the base of the machine, passes through a filter to catch food debris, and is recirculated until the cycle is complete. Each of those stages has a component that gets dirty, blocks up, or fails over time, and each needs a different cleaning approach. Treating the whole machine as one thing that gets a vinegar rinse is part of the reason so many dishwashers underperform.
The Filter Assembly and Why “Self-Cleaning” Models Still Need Attention
The filter is usually at the bottom of the cavity beneath the lower spray arm, and on most modern machines it is a multi-part assembly — a coarse outer mesh, a fine inner filter, and sometimes a metal plate above. Many dishwashers sold in the last decade are marketed as having “self-cleaning” filters, which is true only up to a point. The mechanism that handles small food particles will not handle bones, fruit stones, label fragments from jars, or the accumulated greasy residue that builds up on the mesh from countless cycles. We routinely find filters that have not been touched since installation, completely clogged with a black sludge, on machines whose owners genuinely did not know the filter came out. Lifting and twisting the central part of the assembly removes it, and the whole thing comes apart for proper cleaning. A blocked filter is the single most common reason for poor wash results, and it is also a cause of bad smells that no amount of vinegar will fix.
The Spray Arms and the Limescale Problem in West Lancashire
The spray arms are the rotating bars that throw water onto the dishes from above and below. Each arm has dozens of small nozzles, and in our hard water region these nozzles slowly clog with limescale from the inside outwards. The symptom is dishes that come out perfectly clean on the side facing the centre of the rack and stubbornly dirty on the outer edge, because the outer nozzles have lost their throw. Spray arms unclip from their spindles on most models — the upper one usually unscrews, the lower one usually pulls upward — and the proper clean is to flush them through with warm water, then use a thin wire or unfolded paperclip to clear each nozzle individually. A vinegar soak afterwards dissolves the remaining limescale. Doing this once a year makes a noticeable difference to wash quality on dishwashers in Ormskirk, Skelmersdale, Burscough and across the wider region where hard water is the norm.
The Door Seal and the Hidden Source of Bad Smells
The rubber gasket that runs around the inside of the door is where most dishwasher smells actually come from, not from the sump or filter as people often assume. Food particles, soap residue and water collect in the folds of the seal, and because the seal stays slightly damp between cycles, it becomes a perfect environment for the black mould that eventually triggers the smell. A microfibre cloth, warm soapy water, and a careful run around the entire seal — including the fold underneath the lip at the bottom of the door — eliminates this in a few minutes. This is the cleaning step we are most often asked about retrospectively, after we have been called for a dishwasher that “smells even though it has been cleaned.”
The Sump and Drain Pump – The Limits of DIY Cleaning
Beneath the filter is the sump, the lowest point of the machine where water collects before being pumped out. The drain pump is housed in or near the sump and is the most common single mechanical failure point on dishwashers. Coins, olive stones, small bones and shards of glass routinely end up in the pump impeller, which is a removable component on most machines but requires the dishwasher to be tipped on its side or pulled out and accessed from beneath. This is where DIY cleaning genuinely reaches its limit. If you have flushed the filter, cleared the spray arms, run a hot vinegar cycle and the machine still will not drain or makes a humming-without-action noise on the drain phase, you are looking at a pump intervention rather than a cleaning job. The Vinegar and Soda Question – What Actually Happens Inside
Running a cup of white vinegar through a hot empty cycle is genuinely useful, but it is not the universal cure it is sometimes sold as. Vinegar is a mild acid and will dissolve light limescale, soap scum and grease residue from internal pipework and the inner walls of the cavity. What it will not do is unblock a properly clogged spray arm, remove a piece of plastic from the pump impeller, or fix a faulty heating element. Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled on the cavity floor and left overnight before a hot cycle helps with smells from the cavity itself, but again it is a cleaning step, not a repair. The honest summary is that vinegar and bicarbonate of soda are useful as part of a wider clean, not as substitutes for actually pulling the filter and clearing the spray arms.
The Cleaning Schedule That Actually Holds Up
The pattern we see on dishwashers that last well past their expected lifespan is broadly consistent. Filter pulled out and rinsed under the tap weekly takes about thirty seconds. Door seal wiped down weekly, including the bottom fold, takes about a minute. Spray arms removed and nozzles cleared annually, or twice annually for hard-water households, takes about fifteen minutes. Hot empty vinegar cycle every two to three months takes no active effort but does need running. That is the entire programme, and it is the difference between a dishwasher that breaks down at six or seven years and one that is still earning its place at twelve.
What Cleaning Will Not Fix – Recognising a Genuine Fault
Some symptoms look like cleaning problems but are actually mechanical or electronic faults. A dishwasher that runs the full cycle but leaves the dishes cold and gritty has a heating element issue, not a dirt issue — the detergent never activates properly because the water never reaches working temperature. A dishwasher that displays an error code and stops mid-cycle is reporting a fault from a sensor, not asking to be cleaned. A dishwasher that floods the floor has a seal, hose or valve problem that no amount of cleaning will resolve. Knowing where cleaning ends and repair begins saves hours of effort on jobs that were never going to work.
