The Sprung Hinges That Carry Everything
An oven door is heavy, double or triple glazed, and it closes against its seal with real force. All of that is managed by two sprung hinges at the bottom corners, each a small mechanism of levers and a powerful spring. When one hinge weakens or its arm wears, the symptoms follow a recognisable sequence. First the door stops holding itself at the half-open grilling position and drifts downward. Then it starts to sit fractionally proud at one top corner, and you notice the seal touching on one side before the other. Finally it will not pull itself fully shut at all, and the last centimetre needs a push and a hold. Why Built-In Doors Fail Differently
Freestanding cookers get pulled out and cleaned around. Integrated ovens sit at chest height in a housing, which changes the wear pattern in two ways. The door becomes the handle for the whole appliance, leaned on while basting and gripped while lifting heavy trays, loads the hinges were never designed to enjoy. And because the oven cannot easily be moved, small alignment problems in the housing itself, a shelf sagging beneath the appliance or fixing screws working loose, present as door faults, with the door meeting a frame that is no longer square. Glass, Removal Catches and the Cautionary Word
Most modern doors lift off their hinges using small locking catches, which makes cleaning between the glass panels possible but also creates a classic mishap, a door refitted with one catch not fully seated, which then twists the hinges the next time it is opened.
