Dishwasher Salt Light Stays On After Refilling and What It Actually Means

A dishwasher salt light that refuses to go out after a refill is one of the most common queries we take, and it is worth understanding before assuming something has broken. What the Dishwasher Salt Light Is Measuring

Dishwashers contain a small water softener packed with resin beads that strip calcium and magnesium out of the incoming supply. Those beads become saturated and must be regenerated, which is what the salt does. Coarse dishwasher salt dissolves into a brine that flushes the resin clean, and the process repeats automatically according to the hardness setting.

The indicator does not measure how much salt is in the reservoir in the way a fuel gauge measures a tank. Most machines use a float or a conductivity sensor sitting in the brine, and it reports whether the solution is saturated. That distinction explains almost every case of a light that stays on when the compartment is visibly full.

The Delay That Fools Almost Everyone

Salt takes time to dissolve. After a refill the reservoir contains granules and water, not brine, and until enough has gone into solution the sensor correctly reports a weak mixture. On many machines the dishwasher salt light will stay lit for one or two complete cycles after filling, and this is entirely normal behaviour.

The advice we give is to refill, run two normal cycles, and only then judge whether the light is faulty. A great many call-outs are avoided by waiting. It is also worth topping up with water when filling a reservoir that has run completely dry, because dry granules dissolve very slowly indeed.

Why the Reservoir Empties Faster Here

Regeneration frequency is driven by volume of water passed through the resin, not by time. A household running the dishwasher daily through the autumn will trigger regeneration far more often than one running it twice a week, and in a hard water area each regeneration consumes a meaningful quantity of salt. A dishwasher salt light appearing more often from September onwards is usually reporting increased usage rather than a developing fault.

Settings, and Why a Correct Light Can Look Wrong

Every dishwasher has a water hardness setting, and it governs how aggressively the machine regenerates. A machine set for hard water consumes salt quickly, which is appropriate here but means the reservoir empties faster than owners expect. A dishwasher salt light appearing every fortnight in this area is not necessarily a fault, it may simply reflect a correctly configured machine.

The opposite case causes more damage. Machines are frequently delivered on a default setting intended for soft water, and nobody changes it. The softener under-regenerates, limescale builds on the element and the spray arms, and cleaning performance declines. The Faults That Are Real

A cracked or poorly seated reservoir cap is the most frequent genuine fault. That cap seals against a rubber gasket, and if it is cross-threaded or the gasket has perished, wash water floods into the salt compartment continuously. The result is a permanently diluted brine, a dishwasher salt light that never goes out, and salt consumption that seems impossibly high.

A failed sensor is less common but does occur, particularly on machines that have been run without salt for long periods and have scaled internally. In that situation the sensor is coated and cannot read the solution at all.

The one that matters most is salt spilled into the main wash tub during filling. Undissolved salt granules sitting in the sump are corrosive to stainless steel over time, and the standard advice to run a rinse cycle immediately after refilling exists for exactly that reason. It is not optional housekeeping.

Machines Without a Salt Reservoir

One point worth clearing up, because it generates a good deal of confusion. Some compact and slimline models have no softener and therefore no salt compartment at all, relying instead on detergent tablets that contain a softening agent. On those machines there is no dishwasher salt light to worry about, and adding salt is impossible.

In a hard water area that design is a genuine limitation rather than a convenience. All-in-one tablets soften adequately for light soiling and moderate hardness, but they do not match a properly regenerated resin softener, and machines of this type scale up noticeably faster here than they would elsewhere in the country. When to Call an Engineer

If the light persists after two full cycles, the reservoir is full, the cap is tight and the hardness setting is correct, then something has genuinely failed and testing is needed.
