The honest answer to how do you fix a tumble dryer that is not drying is that it depends entirely on which kind of “not drying” you are dealing with. Warm but damp clothes, cold and damp clothes, and damp clothes from a dryer that feels too hot to touch are three completely different faults with three completely different fixes. Working out which symptom pattern you have is the difference between a five-minute job and a £150 part. Reading the Symptom Pattern Before You Touch Anything

If clothes come out warm but still damp, in most cases the dryer is generating heat correctly but cannot get the moist air out of the drum and away from the laundry. On a vented dryer this is almost always a blocked or kinked vent hose, a clogged lint filter that needs more than a quick brush, or a build-up inside the dryer’s internal ducting that the lint filter never catches. On a condenser dryer the same symptom usually points to a blocked condenser unit at the front-base of the machine — these need to be removed and rinsed out under the tap every few months, and many owners do not realise they exist until they fail. On a heat pump dryer, this symptom often means the secondary filter behind the lint trap is choked, which restricts airflow across the evaporator and stops the moisture removal cycle working properly.
Cold Clothes Coming Out Damp – The Heating Problem
If the drum is spinning and the cycle is running its full duration but the clothes are cool and damp at the end, the dryer is not producing heat at all. On vented and condenser dryers this is almost always a failed heating element, a tripped one-shot thermal fuse, or a failed thermostat. The thermal fuse is a common one that catches people out — it is a non-resettable safety device that blows when the dryer has overheated, usually because of restricted airflow. The fuse itself is cheap and easy to replace, but if you fit a new one without finding out why the original blew, the new one will go too. Hot Clothes Coming Out Damp – The Sensor and Cycle Problem
If the clothes are coming out hot enough that you would not want to hold them, but still feeling damp, you are most likely dealing with a moisture sensor fault or a control board issue. Modern dryers use sensor bars inside the drum to detect when the laundry is dry, and these bars get coated with fabric softener residue or limescale from West Lancashire’s hard water. The sensors then read the laundry as drier than it actually is and end the cycle early. A clean of the sensor bars with a cloth and a little vinegar fixes this surprisingly often. If cleaning does not help, the next suspect is the PCB itself, which is a diagnostic job rather than a guess-and-swap one.

If your dryer is running long cycles, feeling unusually hot from the outside, or smelling slightly scorched, the cause is almost always restricted airflow — and that same restricted airflow is what causes tumble dryer fires. The heating element is designed to run within a specific airflow range, and when it cannot dump heat into moving air, the surrounding lint can reach ignition temperature. Overloading and the Hidden Cost of Cramming the Drum
It is worth saying plainly that a dryer that is rated 8kg dry capacity will not dry 8kg of soaking-wet laundry from a final spin properly, particularly if the spin speed on your washing machine is below 1400rpm. The 8kg figure is the dry-weight capacity, and in practice we recommend filling the drum to no more than two-thirds for proper airflow between garments.
