When a cooker stops working entirely, almost nobody looks at the switch on the wall, and the electric cooker isolator switch is a genuinely common point of failure. It carries the full load of the appliance, it is operated by hand thousands of times over its life, and it sits in the hottest and steamiest part of the kitchen. What an Electric Cooker Isolator Switch Has to Handle
A cooker is among the heaviest electrical loads in a house. Its own circuit runs from the consumer unit at a substantially higher rating than a socket circuit, and the isolator is the switch that interrupts it. Every time it is operated under load, a small arc forms across the contacts as they separate, and each arc removes a minute amount of material.
Over years that adds up. Contacts pit and carbonise, resistance across them rises, and rising resistance generates heat exactly where you least want it. This is why an electric cooker isolator switch that has been in place for fifteen or twenty years is a reasonable suspect when a cooker develops intermittent problems, even though nothing about it looks wrong from the outside.
The Symptoms That Point at the Switch
Intermittent operation is the classic. A cooker that works one day and not the next, or one that cuts out when the switch is knocked while reaching for something above the hob, is describing a mechanical connection problem rather than an appliance fault.
Partial failure is the more revealing symptom. Many cooker circuits switch both live poles, and where one set of contacts has failed while the other still works, the appliance receives a partial supply. The result is a cooker where the hob works and the oven does not, or where the oven heats weakly and never reaches temperature. Heat and discolouration are the warning signs that matter most. Why the Cooker Gets Blamed First
The reason is simple enough. The cooker is the thing that stopped working, it is expensive, and it is the obvious suspect. The switch is a plastic plate that has been on the wall so long it has become invisible.
An engineer approaches it the other way round, because testing the supply takes moments and testing an entire cooker takes considerably longer. Establishing that full voltage is present at the appliance terminals immediately rules the supply in or out, and it prevents the expensive mistake of replacing elements and thermostats on a cooker that was never faulty.
Why This Is Never a Do It Yourself Job
This point deserves stating plainly. A cooker circuit is high current, and the isolator is wired directly into it. Working on one means working on a circuit capable of delivering a fatal shock, and in a domestic kitchen where the isolator is often above a worktop, close to a sink and surrounded by metal.
Replacing an electric cooker isolator switch is electrical installation work rather than appliance repair. It sits within Part P of the building regulations and it belongs to a qualified electrician who will test the circuit afterwards. Age and When to Expect Trouble

Modern switches are no better made in principle, but a newer one has simply done less work.
Where a kitchen has been rewired or refitted within the last decade, the switch is a less likely suspect. Where the cooker has been replaced but the switch left in place, which is extremely common, the switch may be twice the age of the appliance it feeds.
The Connection Behind the Cooker
The isolator is one half of the story. The other is the terminal outlet plate behind or beside the appliance where the cooker cable connects, and the same failure mechanism applies there. Terminal screws work loose through thermal cycling, a loose screw produces resistance, and resistance produces heat.
Where a cooker has been moved out for cleaning and pushed back repeatedly, that connection has been flexed each time. Any sign of heat damage, discoloured insulation or a burning smell from behind the appliance needs the circuit isolated immediately.
