An induction hob is not a hot plate. It is a piece of power electronics that magnetically heats the pan itself, and when it misbehaves, the symptoms are electronic in flavour, flashing symbols, refused pans and zones that simply switch themselves off.
When the Hob Refuses to See the Pan
The most common induction complaint is a zone that beeps, flashes a pan symbol and declines to heat. Before suspecting the hob, suspect the pan, because induction only works with cookware whose base is magnetic and of a sensible size for the zone. A pan that has always worked can stop working, since thin bases distort with age, and a domed or dished base lifts too much metal away from the glass for the coil to couple with. The kitchen magnet test settles it in seconds. If magnetic pans of the right size are refused on one zone but accepted on others, the fault has moved inside, typically to that zone’s coil connections or its sensing circuitry, and that is diagnosable, repairable territory.
The Symbols and Codes the Glass Flashes at You
Induction hobs communicate in codes, and while every brand has its own dialect, the themes repeat. There are codes for overheating electronics, for a pan boiled dry, for supply voltage problems and for internal communication failures between the touch controls and the power boards. One symbol deserves special mention, the residual heat indicator, usually a letter H, which merely warns the glass is still hot and alarms new owners needlessly. Codes that appear once and clear with a reset are often the hob protecting itself from a transient. Codes that return every session are the hob reporting a genuine fault, and noting the exact code before it disappears shortens the engineer’s job considerably. Heat, Ventilation and the Cutting-Out Hob
The power electronics under the glass make real heat of their own, and every induction hob carries a cooling fan and ventilation paths to shed it. A hob that runs happily for twenty minutes and then drops power or shuts a zone down is very often overheating internally, and the causes are usually environmental, ventilation slots blocked by a too-snug drawer or an oven fitted directly beneath breathing its heat upward, or mechanical, a cooling fan that has quietly failed. The fan is a replaceable part, and restoring airflow routinely cures a hob that owners feared was dying.
What Is Repairable and What the Glass Decides
Inside, an induction hob is modular, coils, power boards, control boards and fans, and all of them can be tested and replaced by an engineer with the service data. The honest exception is the glass itself. A cracked induction surface is not cosmetic, because the crack sits millimetres above live electronics and lets spills reach them, so a cracked hob should come off the menu immediately, and on some models the glass and frame assembly is costly enough to make replacement of the hob the sensible call. Everything short of that deserves a proper diagnosis before anyone writes the appliance off.
