Why Your Vacuum Cleaner Smells When Running

A vacuum that fills the room with an unpleasant smell every time it is switched on is usually treated as a cleaning problem, and sometimes that is exactly what it is. The Smell of Hot Electrical Components

The most common reason is restricted airflow. A vacuum motor is cooled by the air passing through it, and a blocked filter, a full bag or an obstruction in the hose starves it of that cooling. Burning Rubber and the Drive Belt

When the brush bar jams with wound hair or a trapped obstruction, the belt keeps being driven while the bar stays still, and it slips against the pulley. Friction heats the rubber and produces a distinctive hot rubber smell within seconds.

A slipping belt is destroying itself while it does this, and if left, it will glaze, stretch and eventually snap. The remedy is to clear the brush bar rather than to replace the belt, because a new belt fitted over an obstructed bar will do exactly the same thing.

Turn the machine off, look at the brush bar and check it turns freely by hand. Hair wound tightly at the ends, near the bearings, is the usual culprit and is easiest removed with the bar out of the head and scissors run carefully along the bristle line.

The Musty and Sour Smells

A stale, damp or sour odour is organic rather than mechanical. It usually means moisture has entered the machine, and the most frequent cause is picking up something damp, whether a spilled drink, a patch of wet carpet after cleaning, or fine debris from a recently mopped floor.

Moisture combined with dust in a warm machine produces exactly the conditions for mould, and it establishes itself in the bag, the bin, the filters and the hose. Once it is present, it will not disperse with use. Everything washable needs to be washed and dried completely, filters included, and a bagged machine needs a fresh bag rather than a cleaned one.
