Opening a dishwasher at the end of a cycle to find everything clean but soaking is a complaint we hear constantly, and it is one of the few where the machine is frequently working exactly as designed. A dishwasher not drying dishes is only sometimes a fault. Across our appliance repair in Ormskirk work, a good proportion of these calls end with an explanation rather than a repair, and it is worth understanding the system before assuming something has broken.
Most Dishwashers Do Not Have a Dryer
The assumption behind the complaint is that a dishwasher blows warm air over the load in the way a tumble dryer does. Most do not. The common arrangement is condensation drying, which uses no additional heat and no fan at all. The final rinse is carried out with very hot water, which leaves the crockery hot. When the cycle ends, the stainless steel tub walls cool faster than the contents, moisture evaporates from the warm dishes and condenses on the cooler tub, then runs down and away to the drain.
It is a genuinely elegant system with no moving parts, and it is why dishwasher interiors are stainless steel rather than plastic. It also has a very specific limitation, which explains almost every complaint about it.
Why Plastics Stay Wet
Condensation drying depends entirely on items retaining heat. Ceramics and glass have high thermal mass and come out of the final rinse genuinely hot, so they hold enough heat to drive moisture off. Plastic has very low thermal mass and cools almost immediately, so it never gets warm enough to evaporate the water sitting on it.
That is why a load can emerge with the plates and glasses bone dry and every plastic container beaded with water. Nothing is wrong. It is the physics of the system, and no repair changes it. Loading plastics on the upper rack and, where the machine allows, leaving them to a natural air dry with the door ajar is the practical answer.
The Rinse Aid Question
Rinse aid is not optional on a condensation drying machine. It lowers the surface tension of the water so it runs off in sheets rather than forming droplets, and less water clinging to the load means less to evaporate. An empty rinse aid reservoir is the single most common cause of a sudden decline in drying performance, and the warning light for it is one of the most widely ignored on any appliance.
The dosage setting matters too. Most machines allow it to be adjusted, and in hard water areas a higher setting genuinely helps. Where spotting appears alongside poor drying, the dosage is usually the place to start.
Loading and Unloading Habits
Upturned mugs, bowls and any item with a recessed base collect water in the hollow and hold it there through the entire drying phase. Angling items where the rack allows, rather than sitting them dead level, lets that water run off.
Overloading blocks the movement of air and water within the tub and leaves items shielded from the hot rinse, so they never reach the temperature drying depends on. Items touching each other trap water between them.
Unloading order matters more than most people realise. Emptying the lower rack first means water pooled on upper rack items drips onto crockery that had already dried. Taking the top rack out first avoids re-wetting everything below it.
When It Genuinely Is a Fault
If the load is coming out cool as well as wet, the final rinse is not reaching temperature and that is a real fault. The heating element or its control is the likely cause, and in hard water areas scale on the element is a common contributor because it insulates the element and prevents it transferring heat properly.
A door seal that is not sealing properly lets warm humid air escape during the drying phase, which removes the temperature differential the system relies on. A machine that has begun drying poorly after the door was knocked or the appliance was moved is worth checking on this basis.
On machines fitted with an active drying system, using a fan or a mineral drying medium, there are additional components that can fail. Those machines dry considerably better than condensation-only ones when working, so a marked decline on a machine that used to dry well points more firmly at a fault than the same complaint on a basic model.
Setting Expectations Sensibly
Eco programmes dry worse than standard ones, because they use lower temperatures throughout and there is simply less heat in the load at the end. That is the trade-off for lower running costs and it is not a defect. Short and quick programmes are worse again for the same reason.
The realistic position is that a condensation drying machine will dry ceramics and glass well, will leave plastics wet, and will do both of those things better with rinse aid than without. If that is what yours is doing, it is working. If the load is cool and wet throughout, or performance has dropped noticeably on the same programme it always handled well, that is worth looking at.
