Washing Machine Burning Smell and When to Switch Off at the Wall

A washing machine burning smell is one fault you should never leave for the weekend. Sometimes it is harmless, such as a new machine bedding in. Other times it is wiring cooking behind the panel. Our engineers provide appliance repair in Ormskirk and across West Lancashire, and we would much rather you called early. The type of smell, and the moment it appears, usually tells us which part is at fault before we lift the lid.

What a Washing Machine Burning Smell Is Telling You

Different faults smell different, and engineers learn to tell them apart. Hot dust or a faint electrical tang during spin points towards the motor. A sharp smell of melting plastic, often with a brown mark at the back, points towards a wiring joint. A smell like a hot tyre usually means a slipping drive belt. Each one needs a different repair, so it helps to note what you noticed and when.

When to Switch Off at the Wall

If you see smoke, hear crackling or smell hot plastic, stop the machine and switch it off at the wall socket. Then pull the plug, as long as you can reach it safely and the plug is not hot. Do not open the door to rescue the washing while the machine is still powered. If the socket itself looks scorched, leave it alone and switch off at the consumer unit instead.

A washing machine burning smell with visible scorching is a fire risk, not a nuisance. Electrical Safety First gives sound advice on appliance fires and safe use. Do not run the machine again to see whether the smell returns. Let an engineer check it first.

Carbon Brushes Wearing Down in the Motor

Many Bosch and Beko machines use a brushed motor. Two small carbon blocks, the brushes, press against a spinning copper drum on the motor shaft and carry current into it. As they wear short, they spark more and run hotter. The householder notices a hot electrical smell during spin, sometimes with a crackle and a loss of speed. Our article on washing machine carbon brushes and motor wear explains the wear pattern in more detail.

We check the brush length and look at the copper surface. If the copper is only lightly marked, new brushes often bring the motor back to life. If it is badly scored or burnt, though, the motor itself needs replacing. Many Samsung models use a direct drive motor with no brushes or belt, so a washing machine burning smell on those points somewhere else.

Overheated Wiring at the Terminal Block

The terminal block is where the mains cable meets the internal wiring at the back of the machine. A loose screw or a crimp that has worked free creates resistance, and resistance makes heat. Over months the plastic darkens, then melts, and the washing machine burning smell grows stronger with each long hot wash. We see this most on heavy autumn loads, when the heater draws its full current for longer.

The same happens at the heater terminals, the door lock plug and the main board connectors. Our engineer looks for browned plastic and checks each joint for tightness. We replace any melted connector rather than cleaning it, because damaged plastic no longer grips the terminal properly. A tripping fault often follows, and washing machine keeps tripping the electrics covers that link.

A Slipping Drive Belt and the Hot Rubber Smell

On belt-driven machines, a rubber belt links the motor pulley to the large drum pulley. When the belt stretches, or the load is too heavy, it slips on the pulley instead of turning the drum. That friction heats the rubber, and you get a washing machine burning smell much like a car clutch. You may also hear a squeal as the drum tries to reach spin speed.

Muddy rugby kit and wet bedding make this worse, since water adds a lot of weight. A slipping belt leaves black dust inside the back panel, which our engineer spots straight away. A new belt is a quick repair. However, if the belt keeps coming off, we also check the drum bearings and the pulley bolt.

Scorching on the Main Control Board

The main control board, the PCB, is the circuit board that runs the programme. It switches the motor, heater and pumps through small relays and a power chip called a triac. When one of those parts overheats, it can scorch the board and give off a sharp, fishy electrical smell. Once you know this washing machine burning smell, you rarely mistake it for anything else. Faults like this often follow a motor or heater problem, because the failing part pulled too much current through the board.

We check the board under a torch for brown patches and lifted tracks. Then we test the motor and heater, so a new board does not burn out for the same reason. That order matters, and it saves you paying for the same part twice.

New Machine Smell and Other Harmless Causes

Not every washing machine burning smell means a fault. A new machine often smells warm for its first few washes while factory oils burn off the heater and motor. Similarly, a sock or a coin trapped against the heater can give off a scorched fabric smell. If the smell fades after a hot empty wash with no detergent, you probably have nothing to worry about.

Repair or Replace After a Burning Smell

Most burning smells come from brushes, belts, connectors or a single heater, and these are fair repairs on a sound machine. A burnt motor or board costs more, so we weigh it against the age and condition of the drum. A washing machine burning smell from a motor that has already failed still deserves a proper diagnosis. Our washing machine repair engineers will explain the options plainly before any work starts.

We carry out washing machine repair Skelmersdale households call on through the busy autumn months. Our team also covers washing machine repair Southport homes, where coastal damp can corrode terminals faster. Further along the coast, we handle washing machine repair Formby customers book for utility rooms and garages.

Our call out fee is just £30, and we refund it against parts or a replacement domestic appliance, which keeps the visit good value for money. If our engineer can fix the machine on the spot, you pay a fixed £60 labour plus the cost of parts. New parts come with a 12 months warranty.

If you notice a washing machine burning smell, switch off at the wall and leave the machine unplugged. Then call us on 01695 768 738 and our engineer will find the cause safely.
