Kitchen Planning Tips

How Long Do Washing Machines Usually Last

Plan your next kitchen in six simple steps. Our kitchen planning tips gives you advice on everything from kitchen layouts to where to place your kitchen appliances.

Kitchen Planning Tips

Step 1 – Collect Kitchen Design Ideas

Collect your favourite ideas:

  • The look: do you prefer modern kitchens, minimalist kitchens, or a vintage look?
  • Kitchen colour ideas: think about the colour scheme.
  • Kitchen cabinet ideas: gather ideas for doors and drawer fronts, handles and worktop materials to match your style.

Step 2 – What Do I Need In My New Kitchen?

Think about your needs and priorities: remember all the appliances you need to fit in! Next make a  floor plan with all the measurements you need for planning.

Get the most important floor plan dimensions:

  • Kitchen wall length, width, height
  • Position and dimensions of doors and windows
  • Kitchen cabinet measurements
  • Kitchen island measurements for a floor plan for a kitchen with island
  • Locate the nearest vent for your extractor hood.
  • Locate your outlets and your water supply.

Step 4 – Learn About Kitchen Layouts

An effective kitchen is based on the golden triangle: keeping the minimum distance between sink, fridge and stove. Look into the following layout types:

  • Island kitchen
  • Galley kitchen
  • L shaped kitchen
  • One wall kitchen

Step 5 – Think About Kitchen Storage

Smart kitchen storage ideas are important to consider. Storage options range from the obvious kitchen storage cabinets to more practical, multifunctional kitchen storage islands, or even a kitchen storage wall.

Step 6 – Where Should I Place My Kitchen Appliances?

When you are thinking about kitchen appliance layouts, refer back to the golden triangle. The most efficient kitchens have ample space along all three legs of the triangle. If your triangle is flat (e.g. a one wall kitchen layout), then adding an extra sink can free up more space for multiple cooks.
