A pattern we see often enough to be worth writing about is the machine that starts misbehaving shortly after a kitchen has been refitted. The household assumes coincidence, or assumes the appliance was already tired and the disruption finished it off. Sometimes that is true. Frequently, though, integrated appliance faults that appear within weeks of installation work were created by the installation itself, and knowing what to look for saves a great deal of expense. Why Built-In Machines Are More Vulnerable
A freestanding appliance sits in open space. Air moves around it, its feet can be adjusted, its hoses run visibly, and any problem announces itself quickly. An integrated appliance is enclosed in a cabinet, fixed to surrounding units, and hidden behind a decor door. Every one of those differences removes a margin of tolerance that a freestanding machine takes for granted.
Ventilation is the first casualty. Ovens and dishwashers both rely on air moving through designed gaps, and those gaps are specified by the manufacturer for a reason. Where a cabinet has been built slightly tight, or where a plinth or infill panel has closed off a lower vent, the machine runs hotter than intended throughout its life. Nothing fails immediately. Components simply age faster, and the fault arrives a year or two later looking like ordinary wear.
The Faults That Trace Back to Fitting
Doors that will not close correctly are among the most common. An integrated dishwasher or oven relies on the decor door being hung with the correct weight and the correct clearance, and a door that is too heavy or badly balanced puts continuous strain on hinges and springs. On a dishwasher, an over-weighted door drops open rather than holding position, and the hinge mechanism wears rapidly. On an oven, a decor panel fitted with insufficient clearance holds the door fractionally open, which lets heat escape and stops the machine holding temperature.
Trapped or kinked services are the second. Fill hoses, drain hoses and mains cables all have to be routed behind and around a machine as it is pushed into an aperture, and it is easy for one to end up compressed against the cabinet back or bent tight around a corner. A restricted drain hose produces intermittent draining faults. A compressed fill hose produces slow filling that looks like a valve problem. A cable trapped against a hot surface degrades quietly until it does not.
Levelling is the third. A machine bolted into a cabinet that is fractionally out of true carries its load unevenly. On a dishwasher this affects how water sits in the base and how effectively it drains. On a washing machine installed under a worktop it affects the suspension and, over time, the bearings.
Damage That Happens During the Work Itself
Refits are dusty. Plaster dust, plasterboard fragments and cut timber debris get everywhere, and appliances left in place during the work draw that dust into their airways and their pumps. A dishwasher run once with construction debris in the base can end up with a scored pump impeller or a blocked spray arm. An oven with fine dust drawn through the cooling fan accumulates it on the fan and the surrounding electronics.
Water is the other risk. Where plumbing has been altered, the first fill after reconnection frequently carries loosened scale and debris from disturbed pipework. That material lands in inlet valve filters and blocks them, producing a machine that fills slowly or not at all within days of the work finishing. It is an easy thing to check and an easy thing to miss.
What to Check When a Fault Appears After a Refit
Start with the door on any integrated machine. Open and close it slowly and watch how it sits, whether it holds position part way, and whether it seals evenly along its whole edge. Look for daylight or feel for heat escaping around an oven door while it is running. Check that the decor panel is not fouling the cabinet frame at any point in its travel.
Then look at what you can see of the services. Where a machine can be drawn forward safely, check the hoses for kinks and the cable for pinching. Look at the floor beneath and behind for any sign of moisture, which after a refit is far more likely to be a disturbed connection than a machine fault.
Finally, consider what changed about the space rather than the machine. A previously freestanding appliance now enclosed, a vent now covered by a plinth, a machine moved to a different position with a longer drain run, or a cabinet built to a slightly different depth are all changes that alter how a machine operates without touching the machine at all.
Getting It Resolved Sensibly
Where the cause is installation rather than component failure, the fix is frequently straightforward and the machine is not at fault. That is worth establishing before any parts are ordered, because replacing a hinge on a dishwasher whose decor door is over-weighted simply resets the clock on the same failure. Correcting the door weight matters more than the hinge.
It is also worth raising with whoever carried out the work, particularly where a vent has been closed off or a service has been trapped. Most fitters will put right a clearance or a routing issue readily once it is identified, and the identification is the part that needs an appliance eye rather than a joinery one.
