Age is the first thing everybody mentions when a machine breaks down, and it is also the thing most often misused. Appliance wear is measured in cycles and hours, not calendar time, and a machine’s age only becomes meaningful once you know how it has been used.
Build quality is the other half of it. There is a real and visible difference in how machines age across the market, and it shows up most clearly in the parts that carry load or heat. What Age Actually Changes
The first thing age changes is parts availability. The second is what else is queuing behind the current fault. On a machine well into its life, the component that failed is rarely the only one under strain. The third is the value of what a repair restores. On a machine with most of its life ahead of it, a repair returns years of service. Past a certain point the same work returns months. That is what turns a sensible repair into a poor one, and it is a calculation about remaining life rather than about the fault.
Faults Where Age Weighs Heavily
Bearing failure on a washing machine is the clearest example. It is a substantial job on most modern machines because the tub is frequently a sealed assembly, and on an older appliance the arithmetic rarely works. A machine showing that fault at four years is worth putting right. The same fault at ten usually is not, particularly if the drum has been running noisy for a while and has been throwing load into the suspension in the meantime.
Electronic module failure is another. Boards are expensive, and on an older machine the cost frequently approaches a meaningful share of a replacement appliance while restoring a machine that will still be old afterwards. Where corrosion has reached the board because of a long-running leak, the picture is worse still, because the damage is unlikely to be confined to the one component.
Faults Where Age Matters Less
Plenty of failures are worth fixing at almost any age because they are cheap, accessible and unrelated to general wear. Door interlocks, thermostats, heating elements, hoses, filters, drawer housings, shelves, feet and belts all fall into this category. A twelve-year-old dryer that has stopped heating because a thermostat has gone open circuit is usually worth an hour of somebody’s time, provided the rest of the machine is sound and the airflow route is clear.
Integrated appliances also shift the balance, because replacing one means matching an aperture and paying for fitting on top of the machine itself. A repair that would be marginal on a freestanding cooker can be entirely reasonable on a built-in oven for exactly that reason.
How to Approach the Decision
Establish the model and the manufacture date from the rating plate first, because everything else follows from knowing what the machine actually is. Then find out what has failed and whether the component is available. Then ask the question that matters, which is what condition the rest of the machine is in and what the engineer expects to go next.
That last question is the one households ask least and benefit from most.
