Electric Cooker Dead After Being Moved

A cooker that worked perfectly on Friday and is completely dead on Monday, with a new floor or a fresh coat of paint in between, is a call we take regularly. It feels like appalling luck and it is almost never coincidence. Why Moving a Cooker Causes Problems

A freestanding electric cooker is not plugged into a socket. It is wired into a dedicated circuit, terminating at a cooker connection unit on the wall, with a heavy cable running from there down to a terminal block on the back of the appliance. That cable is stiff, it carries substantial current, and it is not designed to be flexed repeatedly.

Every time the cooker is pulled forward, that cable moves, and the connections at each end take the strain. Terminal screws that have been in place for years under thermal cycling are not as tight as they look, and a conductor that has been gripped in the same position for a decade does not appreciate being bent. Pull a cooker out to clean behind it, push it back, and a marginal connection can become an open one.

What Typically Fails

A loose terminal screw is the most frequent finding. Screws in high current terminals relax over time as the conductor beds in and as heating and cooling cycles work against them. A screw that was adequate while undisturbed becomes an intermittent contact once the cable has been moved, and intermittent contact under load generates heat, which makes the connection worse.

A broken conductor at the terminal is the next. Where a cable has been flexed at the same point repeatedly over years, individual strands fracture inside the insulation. The cooker may work until the remaining strands can no longer carry the current, at which point it fails under load rather than at switch-on, which is why some cookers work briefly and then die.

On cookers where only part of the appliance has stopped, the picture is different. Many installations supply the appliance through a connection carrying two live conductors, and losing one leaves some elements working and others dead. A cooker where the hob works and the oven does not, or where the grill works and nothing else does, is often showing exactly this rather than multiple simultaneous component failures.

What to Check Before Calling Anyone

Start at the consumer unit. The cooker circuit has its own breaker and it may simply have tripped, particularly if the appliance was moved while switched on or if moisture reached something during cleaning. Resetting it once is reasonable. If it trips again immediately, stop, because that indicates a fault drawing current rather than a nuisance trip.

Then check the cooker switch on the wall. These have a neon indicator on most installations, and a switch that has been knocked to off while the appliance was being moved is a common and slightly embarrassing cause. It is worth eliminating before anything else.

Look for any sign of heat at the switch plate or the connection unit. Discolouration, a faint smell of hot plastic, or a plate that is warm to the touch with the cooker off all indicate a connection problem that needs proper attention rather than experimentation.

Where the Line Sits on This Work

Checking a breaker and a wall switch is ordinary household territory. Opening a cooker connection unit or the terminal block on the appliance is not, because these are high current mains connections and the consequences of getting them wrong are serious rather than inconvenient. Any work behind the outlet plate belongs to a qualified electrician, and a fault in the fixed wiring of the property is electrical work rather than appliance work.

That distinction matters practically as well as legally. When a cooker is dead after being moved, the first job is establishing whether the appliance is receiving supply at all. If it is, the fault is in the cooker and it is ours. If it is not, the fault is in the installation and it belongs with an electrician. Establishing which saves everybody time.

Faults Inside the Appliance

Where the supply is confirmed good, attention turns to the cooker’s own terminal block and internal wiring. The block itself can suffer heat damage over years, particularly where a connection has been slightly loose and running warm, and a block that has begun to char needs replacing rather than retightening.

Internal connections to elements can also be disturbed by movement, particularly on older appliances where the spade terminals on element tails have loosened with thermal cycling. These are within the appliance and part of a normal repair.

Reducing the Risk Next Time

Switch the cooker off at the wall before moving it, every time. Move it squarely rather than walking it side to side, which twists the cable at the terminal. Do not pull it further forward than the cable comfortably allows, and never use the appliance itself to draw the cable through. When pushing it back, make sure the cable is not being trapped or crushed against the wall behind, which is a slower failure but a real one.

If a cooker has been moved for building work and has been sitting disconnected for a while, it is worth having the connection checked before it goes back into daily use rather than discovering a problem the week the kitchen is finished.
