Dishwasher Spray Arms Not Turning and Why Cleaning Fails

A dishwasher that comes to the end of its cycle with one half of the load spotless and the other still coated is not suffering from a detergent problem, whatever the packaging suggests. It is a coverage problem, and coverage depends entirely on the arms sweeping water across every surface. How the Arms Are Driven

There is no motor turning the spray arms. They rotate by reaction, in the same way a garden sprinkler does. The jets along each arm are angled slightly off vertical, and the force of water leaving them pushes the arm around its bearing. That means rotation depends on three things being right at once, and any one of them failing stops the arm dead.

Water has to arrive with enough pressure. The jets have to be clear so the thrust is generated where the design intends. And the arm has to be free to turn on its bearing without fouling anything. Once you understand that, working through the fault becomes a matter of checking each in turn.

Obstruction Is the Commonest Cause

Loading is responsible for most cases. A long knife or a serving spoon slipping through the cutlery basket, a baking tray sitting proud on the lower rack, or a tall glass leaning over from the upper rack will all catch an arm as it comes round. The machine cannot tell you this has happened, so the cycle runs to completion with the arm parked against the obstruction.

The test takes ten seconds. Before starting a cycle, spin each arm by hand through a full rotation. If it strikes anything, that is your answer. Doing this habitually before closing the door prevents a surprising proportion of poor-wash complaints.

Blocked Jets and Hard Water

Across West Lancashire and Merseyside, scale is the second cause and it develops slowly enough that nobody notices a specific day when performance changed. The jets are small and precisely angled, and mineral deposits narrow them unevenly. An arm with jets blocked along one side loses the balance of thrust that turns it, so it either rotates sluggishly or stops entirely.

Food residue does the same from the inside. Fragments that pass the filter can lodge in the arm’s internal channel and work their way to a jet, where they sit and collect more material. Removing an arm and running clean water through it from the centre outwards flushes most of this out. Holding it up to the light and looking through each jet shows immediately which ones are restricted.

Where scale is the culprit, soaking the arm in a descaling solution works considerably better than trying to clear jets mechanically, which risks enlarging or distorting them and changing the spray pattern permanently.

The Bearing and the Mounting

Each arm turns on a plastic bearing, either a central spindle on the lower arm or a mounting nut on the upper. Both wear, and both collect residue. An arm that wobbles noticeably, sits at an angle or has visible play has usually worn its bearing, and a worn arm drags rather than spinning freely.

Refitting after cleaning is where households often introduce a fault. Some upper arms secure with a retaining nut that must be tightened enough to hold but not so much that it grips the arm. Others clip in and need to be felt home. An arm refitted a fraction out of true will rotate for a few turns and then bind, which produces intermittent poor washing that is far harder to diagnose than a permanent fault.

When the Problem Is Water Rather Than the Arm

If both arms are clean, free and correctly fitted but still turn weakly, the fault has moved upstream. A blocked filter starves the circulation pump, and a pump that cannot draw properly cannot generate the pressure the arms need. Lifting out the filter assembly, separating its parts and cleaning the mesh properly rather than rinsing the surface resolves a great deal.

The feed to the upper arm runs up the back of the tub or through a rack-mounted connector on many machines, and that route can block or leak internally. The tell is an upper arm turning weakly while the lower one performs normally, which points at the feed rather than at the pump.

A genuinely failing circulation pump produces weak rotation on both arms together, along with a noticeable change in the sound of the machine during the wash. That is a real repair rather than a maintenance task.

What Good Practice Looks Like

Spin both arms by hand before each cycle. Clean the filter weekly in a household using the machine daily. Remove and flush the arms every few months, and more often in a hard water area. Keep the salt reservoir topped up, because a working water softener slows the scaling that blocks the jets in the first place.

Loading matters as much as maintenance. Keeping tall items on the upper rack, angling bowls rather than sitting them flat, and making sure nothing protrudes through the base of the cutlery basket all protect the arms from the obstruction that stops them.
