You cannot filter the sea out of the air, but you can deny the salt its favourite conditions. Keep appliances in heated, ventilated indoor spaces where the daily airing of the room carries damp away, and be wary of garaging laundry machines in coastal properties. Wipe down external metalwork occasionally, including the often-forgotten rear panel during a spring clean, and deal promptly with any small leak or standing moisture, because salt plus a drip is the fastest corrosion recipe there is. Most usefully of all, take intermittent electrical gremlins seriously. A machine that misbehaves in damp weather and recovers in dry spells is describing a corroding connection with great precision, and having it found early is a far smaller job than replacing the board it eventually damages.
