The Selector Switch and Energy Regulator

When a zone heats but only weakly, or only works on the highest setting, or comes on regardless of where you set the dial, the culprit is very often the control behind the dial rather than the element itself. Traditional radiant and solid-plate hobs use an energy regulator, sometimes called a simmerstat, which switches the element on and off in cycles to hold a set temperature. When one of these wears out, the zone loses its ability to modulate, so it either sits on full power or barely warms at all. A related fault is a worn selector switch on hobs that use one, where the internal contacts have burned or pitted over years of use and no longer pass current cleanly.
